Debra,
National Ocean Month is ending, and I think it’s safe to say this was the best ocean month we’ve ever had.
For the last month, all eyes have been on our ocean. Scientists, policymakers, local leaders and passionate ocean lovers like you came together and took solid steps forward towards a healthy, sustainable ocean.
I’m thrilled to share three of the ocean victories we celebrated recently—none of which would have been possible without your support.
#TeamSeas celebrated 15 million pounds of trash cleaned. This month we celebrated the halfway mark of #TeamSeas, a global campaign where every dollar donated means one pound of trash removed from our beaches, rivers and ocean. In just a year and a half, thanks to Ocean Conservancy and our International Coastal Cleanup® partners, 100,000 volunteers have participated in 1,200 cleanups in 63 countries. Congress introduced important legislation around shipping. This month, both the Clean Shipping Act of 2023 and the International Maritime Pollution Accountability Act were introduced in Congress. Ocean Conservancy worked with bill sponsors to help draft language and build support among other non-governmental organizations, industry and congressional leaders leading up to their introductions. These acts aim to curb shipping emissions and set clean shipping standards, both of which are imperative in combatting the climate crisis. International leaders came together to craft a Global Plastics Treaty. Our team was in Paris in June for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to end the massive threat of plastic pollution by tackling both its production and the pollution it causes. Ocean Conservancy gave a floor statement at the United Nations during the treaty negotiations advocating for a 50% global reduction in single-use plastics by 2050. Discover how a 50% reduction could change the future of plastics in our ocean >>
National Ocean Month might be over, but the work doesn’t stop. There’s no better time than now to start a monthly gift and make every month ocean month. Your generous, continued support means that we can continue to celebrate ocean victories all year long.
