Holy Mola Mola!

This huge sunfish was found caught in a net. It was one fortunate fish, as it is not one that is eaten in Europe, so was released in good shape back into the ocean. They don't move that much anyway, which probably helped as it was immobilized in the net. I frequently see sunfish on the way to Catalina, but the largest one was maybe 3 feet in diameter. Imagine seeing this one doing what sunfish typically do, basking flat on the surface of the water! It is believed they do this to warm themselves up after hunting for food in the deeps. I once saw one with a seagull hitching a ride on it, probably also helping it out by removing parasites. This one would look like a huge dark blob!
