Citizen Scientists, Unite!

Updated: Aug 27, 2020

Itching to help out on a real science project? Two sites, citizenscience.gov and zooniverse contain a wealth of projects that you can participate in. Floating Forests lets you help identify patches of Giant kelp from Sat Nav pictures. Or, you could help count penguins in Antarctica through Penguin Watch, partnering with WWF and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) helping to count penguins from aerial photos taken with drones and planes in remote locations. Or, you could help track and even raise and release ladybugs through the Lost Ladybug project. The required skill levels ranges from easy (using your phone to upload photos of ladybugs to solve the mystery of why some ladybugs are disappearing) to AP Bio-level (Project Monarch Health will mail you a kit and instructions for catching monarch butterflies and caterpillars and testing them for harmful parasites). It is all an attempt to move through the mountains of data being collected via crowd sourcing. I love the whole concept - there's a bit for everyone.
